Why is your immune system turning on you attacking your healthy cells?

Yes, we are talking about autoimmune diseases, which began 40 years ago in the west. Now it's emerging in other emerging countries that never experienced it before, such as inflammatory bowel disease in the Middle East and east Asia.

Most known autoimmune diseases from over a 100 different types where the immune system turns on healthy tissues are:

  • type 1 diabetes

  • rheumatoid arthritis

  • inflammatory bowel disease

  • multiple sclerosis

  • coeliac disease

  • lupus

  • psoriasis

  • ulcerative colitis and

  • IBS.

In the UK alone, 4 million people have developed one or two of these conditions. Globally, autoimmune diseases rise by 3-9% annually. Scientists believe it has a lot to do with environmental factors.

Experts say, something is changing in our environment with which we predispose more to autoimmune diseases, while our human genetics hasn't changed over the last few decades.

Western style fast-food diets are missing important ingredients (fibre) that affect people's microbiome - the collection of microorganisms in the gut.

Since scientists cannot stop fast food franchises, they are looking at the fundamental genetic mechanism that could underline autoimmune diseases and therefore finding people who are more susceptible to have them than others.

Today's technology allows scientists to identify genetic patterns by finding tiny DNA differences in a large number of individuals. However finding the right treatment can be tricky as one autoimmune disease can have many different versions. Thus, it is more difficult to find the right treatment for each.

There are a lot of potential therapies but not known which one is best for the various types of diseases. Scientists are focusing now on how to group and stratify patients in order to provide the correct treatment.

Overall, there is no cure for the emerging autoimmune diseases which usually develop at a young age affecting their education, their health for life - first job or having a family. There is an urgent need for new treatments and drugs to tackle these diseases.

How reflexology contributes to autoimmune diseases?

Reflexology helps to reduce the overactive immune system because it works on the whole body. For instance the digestive system where 70-80% of the tissues are linked to the immune system, as well as the respiratory system and the endocrine system.

Reflexology also rebalances the whole system which facilitates relaxation and lowers stress hormones, thus triggering the parasympathetic nervous system.

And finally, reflexology has a detoxifying effect, especially helpful when the immune system produces unwanted toxins. Treatment of the liver and kidneys are important here.
