What is a healthy heart?

Updated: Jan 12

When we breath in, the heart rate increases in order to get oxygenated blood around the body faster but when we breath in the heart rate slows. This is regulated by the vagus nerve, which engages upon exhalation and suppresses at inhalation.

The greater the difference in the heart rate, the higher the vagal tone is, which is the strength of your vagus nerve. Vagal tone can be determined by an electrocardiogram.

Research has shown people with higher vagal tone are healthier with healthier hearts, more resilient under stress and have increased brain power. They can switch from excitement to relaxation easier. They tend to have good memories. They feel closer to loved ones. They are more altruistic. They are capable of recovering from confrontation quicker.

Since their bodies regulate blood glucose levels better, it reduces the likelihood of diabetes, stroke and cardiovascular diseases. They also have higher levels of oxytocin and generally live longer.

On the other hand, lower vagal tone is linked to sensitivity to stress and diseases. It has also been associated with chronic inflammation and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, chronic pain and epilepsy. Lower vagal tone also leads to slower flow through the gut, an increased risk of RBS and weaker digestion. As the Vagus Nerve is not engaged heart rate is higher therefore there is a greater risk of heart attacks. People with lower vagal tone are more prone to negative moods, have difficulty managing emotions resulting in depression and anxiety.
