Reflexology and our hard-working blood vessels

Blood vessels are the channels for the blood to flow freely throughout the body. Blood vessels carry oxygen and nutrients to all cells and tissues whilst removing waste and harmful toxins. Blood vessels are a very important part of a reflexologist, and the most effective benefit of reflexology is to improve the circulation in the body.

Stress and tension that clogs the cardiovascular system and restricts blood flow, leads to circulation becoming sluggish. Reflexology starts up the engine of the cardiovascular vessels by initiating the flow of blood naturally and easily, by massaging and using pressure points on the feet, thus blockages are released, and the body feels in harmony again.

The feet is a mirror of the body containing all organs, glands, nerves and the other parts of the body and those areas are massaged with fingers and thumbs with a unique method. Not only points of the cardiovascular reflexes (the exercise pressor reflex, the central command and the arterial baroreflex) need a special attention but the whole foot – one at the time – because, if one part of the body is out of sync, it will affect the other parts in the body, making you feel irritable, sluggish, or tired. Reflexology treatments meant to be taken regularly to receive its most effective benefits, it keeps the body working in a perfect balance.

Picked out a few of my fav facts about our precious blood vessels:

1. Your blood vessels can circle the globe more than twice because if they are laid out in a line they would measure more than 60,000 miles in length. Circumference of the earth is: 24,873.6 miles (NASA).

2. Blood vessels carry a million barrels of blood in a lifetime, the heart alone pumps about 1,800 gallons of blood through the blood vessels daily (NIA).

3. Blood vessels are also known as the blood brain barrier, because a network of blood vessels and tissues containing closely-spaced cells keeps harmful bacteria and substances out (National Cancer Institute) but of course allows essential substances in, such as water, oxygen and carbon-dioxide to pass into the brain.

4. Blood vessels are affected by the weather; they expand upon heat helping you to cool down and narrow or constrict to keep heat in the body (National Library of Medicine).

5. Blood vessels might get a boost from chocolate, eating moderate amounts and dark chocolate that contains micronutrients called flavonoids are believed to have strong antioxidant properties (American Institute of Cancer Research).
