Reflexology, a complementary therapy to people with cancer

Updated: May 2, 2023

It's such a great pleasure to come across with a medical article that provides relevant evidence where reflexology helps cancer patients to manage their symptoms and handle their daily tasks better.

The research was taken by a Michigan State University, and it is known as the first large-scale randomised study of reflexology complementing standard cancer treatment. As most of you now aware, reflexology stimulates specific points on the feet and hands working towards improving correspondent organs, glands and other parts in the body.

This study surveyed 385 women with advanced breast cancer (spread beyond the breast) undergoing chemotherapy or hormonal therapy. The researchers divided them into three groups. One group received treatments from a certified reflexologist. Another group received foot massages that were acting as a placebo effect and the last group had no foot manipulation, only their standard medical treatment.

The professor (Gwen Wyatt) and her team examined the patients' symptoms upon intake and in 5 and 11 weeks as well. They found that the group who received reflexology had rather positive physical improvement not psychological. Those patients reported significantly less shortness of breath thus they could perform their daily tasks such as climbing a flight of stairs, getting dressed or going grocery shopping.

My client who has lung and pancreas cancer reported that pain in her legs are less and feeling lighter. She also sleeps much better than before having reflexology treatments. Now, she regularly books me in for treatments.

The research team didn't have a chance to further investigate the emotional side effects such as anxiety and depression. However, I think and many of you will agree that anxiety and depression cannot be improved within 11 weeks. Depression and anxiety is individual for each person and it takes longer to be focused on and treated.

Since that research has been done a decade ago I digged a bit more. At Cancer Research UK (2022) reflexology is the most popular complementary therapy among people with cancer. People with cancer reported feeling more relaxed, being able to cope after a reflexology session. Reflexology also helps them cope better with stress and anxiety, pain release and lifting their mood with the feeling of well-being.
