Part I: Treating Multiple Sclerosis with reflexology

Certain types of conditions that I meet in my professional practice will require additional research. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is one of many nerve system related conditions that my clientele seeks.

For these couple of blogs, MS North West Therapy Centre Sligo turned out to be a great source, understanding what MS is, what physical and emotional symptoms can cause and how reflexology is one of the best treatments to help clients with this condition.

What do we know about Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis is a progressive condition of the Central Nervous System in which scattered patches of myelin in the brain and spinal cord are destroyed. The resulting symptoms are ranging from numbness and tingling to paralysis and incontinence. No two people will carry the same symptoms and their severity varies too. This illness carries multiple patchy patterns of disabilities, variable in site and time with dramatic unpredictable improvements or deterioration. The cause of the condition is unknown. The cure of the condition is unknown. It is thought to be an autoimmune disorder, but there is also evidence that it has genetic qualities. Environment is also a key part of this condition, as well as viruses picked up in early stages of life.

Physical symptoms

  • Flu like, low attention span

  • Heavy leg or ambulatory problems

  • Stiff joints and muscle spasm or cramp

  • Vertigo or dizziness

  • Loss of balance or memory

  • Extreme fatigue

  • Back, limb or head pain

  • Coordination problems

  • Burning sensation in feet or hands

  • Incontinence or constipation

  • Atrophy syndrome

  • Numbness and pins and needles

  • Frequent urinary tract infections

  • Blurred double vision or loss of sight

  • Slowed thought process

  • Sexual difficulties or dysfunction

Emotional symptoms

  • Denial

  • Fear anxiety or worry

  • Depression

  • Embarrassment

  • Concern

  • Sadness

  • Nervousness

  • Doubt

  • Stress and tension

  • Impatience

  • Grief

  • Anger or frustration

  • Restlessness or overthinking

  • Paranoia

Clients would have about four or five of the above symptoms.

How can reflexology contribute?

Reflexology helps reduce tension and stress, improves circulation of blood and the lymph throughout the body. It can lower toxins and impurities in the body, by which it helps the body create space to balance itself, simultaneously strengthens the immune system and energizes the body.

  • Treating the brain with reflexology, helps to restore areas of degeneration and stimulate brain function, while at the same time creating relaxation.

  • Working the spine strengthens the lines of communication of the nervous system.

  • Stimulating the eye reflex area, reduces visual disturbances and enhances optimal functioning.

  • Tension ease and communication improves when throat reflex area is treated.

  • Working on the liver reflexes help detoxify the body and mind. It is particularly beneficial for clients who are on medication for their condition.

  • Reflexology treatment on the limbs helps to improve sensitivity, mobility and coordination.

  • The urinary system including the bladder helps to stimulate muscle sphincters and stimulate all nervous functions of the body via the bladder channel. By working the kidneys, they support the urinary system, but are also used as a helper area for the eyes and vision process.

  • Treating the adrenals as part of the endocrine system, helps to reduce inflammation.

  • Tension and anxiety are eased when working on the solar plexus and diaphragm simultaneously the lungs deepen the breath of life.

All of the above points, areas, and systems should include the endocrine system to support inner strength and understanding, the lymphatic system. Removing degenerated tissue, improves circulation and oxygenates the blood for the circulatory system. Also, by working all reflex points on both feet, rebuilding the natural state of mind, body and soul.

There is no cure for Multiple Sclerosis, however, with adequate treatments symptoms and relapses can be reduced which may slow the progression of the condition.

The next part of my research blog will go into the emotional repression and stress side of a person having MS and how best to understand it and learn to have a good life with it with the support of reflexology treatments.
