How reflexology techniques ease cold symptoms?

It is the time of the year for catching colds and seasonal allergies. What do we do for colds, get more vitamin (C) in our system, painkillers, cold meds and hot drinks in general? They can ease the cold symptoms for sure but never really heal you. You will feel better, and can carry on your daily routines but a common cold will stay in your body until your immune system fights it off naturally. Firstly, and most importantly you should rest it out, giving your body time to relax and recharge its ‘fuel’. All the meds and natural remedies will work better and faster as well than because you are providing time to recuperate. But there are simple reflexology massage techniques that can also ease your cold symptoms that you can repeat on yourself regularly.

I will be uploading reflexology tutorials for all types of illnesses or problems early next year but for now please have a little read about what you can do with really simple steps. Of course, I researched what I recommend to be useful, you can also find the full articles in the source’s session (at the bottom of this page). For now, I will just summarise their main points.

Although it is great to do a self-massage, it is yet more effective when an expert does the treatment. They will apply the correct pressure and massage on the points and even find them easier than we would on ourselves. However, these recommended self-massages will add to our well-being and ideally you can schedule them in your own time flexibly.

DIY Foot reflexology massage points

Three powerful Chinese reflexology points are the lung, the sinus and the nose points. In Chinese medicine, when the lung qi is weak, the defensive barrier of the wei qi (the lungs associated energy meridian) will be compromised. Using reflexology points for the lungs can release energy and wei qi into the lung meridian protecting the body. Lung point massage: Massage the ball of your feet (below the three middle toes) in an up and down direction for 30 to 60 seconds, on each foot. Or apply pressure with your thumbs and massage in small circles on the Lung point.

The sinus reflexology point is clearing away congestion, mucus in the nose, nasal cavities, and sinuses. There are ten sinus points in the body but the most important one is on the tip of your toe pad. Sinus point massage: Rub the tip of your big toe pad (light blue, image below) from side to side for 30 seconds on each foot. Note: in this case massaging the left toe will have an effect on the right sinus and vice versa, as in Chinese reflexology the body’s energy meridians switch at the neck. Thus, in the case of the lung point the left foot will correspond to the left lung and the right to the right lung, as the lungs are located below the neck.

Lastly the nose reflexology eases the soreness of blowing your nose, clearing the flow of qi and clears away the mucus – opening up your breathing through your nose. The nose reflexology point (dark blue, image above) is at the outside edge of your big toe where the sole meets the skin. It is beside the toenail right above the toe knuckle. Same here again as with the sinus point, the left toe corresponds to the right side of the nose and vice versa. Nose point massage: Massage the outside edge of your big toe (next to the toenail) from side to side for 30 seconds on each foot.

Apply medium to hard pressure to the lung and sinus points but go easy on the nose point, you will also notice the sensitivity of those points and take back from the pressure when needed. When you have a cold, try to massage these points four times a day for their best effectiveness. Ideally when you wake up, one hour before or after your lunch, one hour before your dinner and before bedtime.

And now let’s see how hand reflexology can ease blocked sinuses and colds.

DIY Hand Reflexology Massage Points

I loved the way Michele Stevens reflexologist introduces it…

The Michele Stevens reflexology massage you can easily adapt into your life when need it.:

Start with the Head Reflex, rub the thumb of the other hand, work up and down at least 3 times will help calm the mind and clear the head.

Pituitary (end of the thumb point) needs to be pressed and circled for a few seconds. The Pituitary, master gland is responsible for releasing hormones that stimulate the adrenal glands, the thyroid glands, the ovaries and testes.

D’aphragm area is the ear/eye area, by putting small pressure at the base of your fingers, going back and forth from the index finger to the little finger. This massage helps ease pain and tension behind the eyes and in the ears.

Sinus reflex point: Using your other fingers move up and down the fingers from the base of the fingers to the tips and back. This point relieves congestion in the sinus. Repeat at least 2-3 times.

And lastly, Lymphatics working on the back of the hand, use the thumb or fingers of your other hand to work in between the fingers. Do this 2-3 times as well. This method supports the body fighting the infection.

Note: Drink plenty of water to aid the removal of toxins and to help stay hydrated.

Further reflexology tutorials and support

I found a couple of excellent and very sort 6-8 minutes YouTube videos to follow as well:

In this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Un78atSKX80 Michelle Rogers talks you through reflexology methods for colds, blocked nose and clearing sinuses.

And in this recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LXITFH5rVM Lucy Johns demonstrates reflexology techniques (on a doll) how to ease children with symptoms from colds, congestion and coughs.

I also added this link: http://www.faqs.org/oc/Overcoming-colds-flu/Strengthening-reflexology.html, which provides further self-massage pointers and a diagram to treat headaches, asthma, bronchitis, earaches, colds on the hand and the feet as well.
